Statement of Need
Major depressive disorder affects an estimated 23 million adult Americans each year and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, impaired social and physical functioning, and increased risk for suicide. Over the years, a wide range of treatments have become available for depression, including monoamine oxidase inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, bupropion, venlafaxine, and cognitive behavioral therapy. Although a substantial proportion of patients do not initially respond to treatment, recent evidence from the STAR*D trials indicates that augmentation or switching to a different antidepressant can improve remission rates. However, many antidepressants have contraindications or require dietary restrictions that could interfere with medication compliance. Emerging data demonstrate that newer delivery systems may provide improved antidepressant benefit, particularly in patients reporting depression with atypical features. In this second of a two-part interactive and case-based CME Outfitters educational activity, the experts will use case studies to illustrate challenges facing clinicians in the treatment of depression and will explore novel treatment strategies in the management of depression. Part one of this series, "Depression with Atypical Features Part I: Recognition, Diagnosis, and Management," premiered in June 2006 and focused on evidence-based educational information and clinical context regarding the efficacy of medications used in the treatment of depression with atypical features. Archived versions of part one are available online at http://www.cmeoutfitters.com/cmea.asp?ID=210.
